What is CNC Machining?

CNC machining is a widely utilized manufacturing process that automates the production of designs from metal or plastic stock using high-speed cutting tools. Standard CNC equipment in our facility includes 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling machines, lathes, and routers, with variations in part-cutting methods. Workpieces can remain stationary while the tool moves, the tool can stay fixed as the workpiece rotates and shifts, or both the tool and workpiece can move in coordination.

Our skilled machinists program CNC machines based on CAD models to create precise and repeatable tool paths for custom parts. CNC machining is compatible with nearly all metals and rigid plastics, making it applicable across industries ranging from aerospace to electronics. TTD offers custom CNC machining services for more than 50 materials, from common aluminum to high-performance titanium, as well as engineered plastics such as PEEK and Ultem 2300.

Advantages and Challenges of CNC Machining?

At TTD, we see CNC machining as a manufacturing cornerstone—balancing key advantages and inherent challenges. For precision projects, understanding both unlocks its full potential. Whether prototyping custom parts or scaling production, we leverage these pros/cons to optimize processes, ensure top-tier quality, and turn your digital designs into high-precision reality.
01

Advantages of CNC Machining

  • Accuracy and precision: CNC machines are highly accurate and can consistently produce parts with tight tolerances. This level of precision is difficult to achieve with manual machining processes.

  • Repeatability: CNC machines can produce identical parts over and over again with the same high level of accuracy and precision. This makes CNC machining ideal for large-scale production runs.

  • Speed: CNC machines can produce parts quickly and efficiently, especially when compared to manual machining processes. This allows for faster turnaround times and shorter production cycles.

  • Flexibility: CNC machines can be programmed to produce a wide range of parts and can handle a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites.

  • Reduced labor costs: Because CNC machines are automated, they require less human intervention than manual machines. This means that fewer workers are needed to operate and monitor the machines, which can result in lower labor costs.

02

Challenges of CNC Machining

  • Complexity: The programming and operation of CNC machines require specialized training and technical knowledge. This can be a challenge for companies that don’t have experienced CNC operators on staff.

  • Limited flexibility: While CNC machines can produce a wide range of parts, they are limited by the size and capabilities of the machine. This means that some parts may be too large or too complex to be produced by a particular CNC machine.

  • Material limitations: While CNC machines can handle a wide range of materials, certain materials may be more difficult to machine than others. This can result in longer machining times, increased tool wear, and other challenges.

CNC Machining FAQs

NO! – No minimum quantity constraint. TTD provides prototyping and short – to medium – run production machining services, catering to diverse project scales from single – piece customization to batch production.

For 3D drawings, we prefer formats like STEP, IGES, or X_T. For 2D drawings, PDF format is ideal, and it’s beneficial if dimensional tolerances are clearly indicated to ensure machining accuracy.

TTD offers flexible payment methods:
  1. Bank – to – bank wire transfer
  2. Common online payment platforms (e.g., PayPal, Alipay) to facilitate smooth transactions.

For metal machining, general tolerances can reach ±0.005″ (±0.127 mm) following ISO 2768 standards (unless specified otherwise). For plastics and composites, the general tolerance is ±0.010″ (±0.254 mm), ensuring consistent quality across different materials.

We specialize in precision machining with tolerances as tight as ±0.0002″ (0.005 mm). TTD can manufacture and inspect components to meet strict tolerance requirements per your drawing specifications, guaranteeing high – precision results.

  • For prototypes: Lead time is usually 2 – 3 weeks.
  • For production runs: Typically 4 weeks.
We also offer emergency and rush services for urgent projects to meet your time – sensitive needs.
